A Breakthrough from the Michael J Fox Foundation!

As a Parkinson’s patient, I felt a little left behind by biology’s century — until now

Michael J Fox

BREAKING NEWS: Today, The Michael J. Fox Foundation has announced a significant breakthrough in the search for a Parkinson’s biomarker. This milestone opens a new chapter for research.

From the Michael J Fox Foundation:

“In an enormous leap forward in the understanding of Parkinson’s disease (PD), researchers have discovered a new tool that can reveal a key pathology of the disease: abnormal alpha-synuclein — known as the “Parkinson’s protein” — in brain and body cells. The breakthrough, announced last night as it was published in the scientific journal The Lancet Neurology, opens a new chapter for research, with the promise of a future where every person living with Parkinson’s can expect improved care and treatments — and newly diagnosed individuals may never advance to full-blown symptoms.”

For those of us with Parkinson’s, we have been hearing about possible breakthroughs many times, only to be disappointed that nothing actually workes. This time, it seems that we may finally be able to move forward in the never ending battle against PD. I have been one of the fortunate ones, having lived well for 14 years with Parkinson’s. I credit consistent exercise and my outlook on life with keeping most symptoms as mere annoyances. But over the years, I have seen many people who have not fared well after delayed or misdiagnoses, misinformation and isolation. And we have seen the “cure” as a moving target – always 5 years away. Or one step forward and two backwards. Let’s hope that in this case it is two steps forward, non backwards. Thank you Michael J Fox for all that you have done for us Parkie’s over the years. You are our inspiration!

Clinical Trials Corner

SEPTEMBER 2025

I’ve been hesitant to feature new clinical trials as a few that I had on my list to include in future columns have either been removed from the site or marked as withdrawn. Keeping my fingers crossed that the trials I feature continue to recruit and maintain their funding. Click here for the rest of the report from Jen
