Parkinson’s Awareness Month

We need more awareness to break the myths and stereotypes around the condition… It can impact anyone, regardless of age or ethnicity

Manon Day

Today is the start of Parkinson’s Awareness Month. There are many opportunities for you to celebrate – yes celebrate- all things Parkinson’s. You can walk for PD, attend numerous lectures, webinars, classes and more. This is a great time to begin educating others about living with Parkinson’s. You can do a quick search of the internet to find out what is happening near you. Check my last blog post for some great options available to all.

Just in time for Parkinson’s Awareness Month

The Wall Street Journal published an article on March 20: Parkinson’s Disease Can Now Be Detected Through the Skin, breaking the news to us before the Fox Foundation did. A new skin test identifies Parkinson’s by a protein rather than waiting for symptoms that can take years to appear. This has amazing implications for people not yet diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. The earlier someone is diagnosed correctly, the sooner they can start disease modifying treatments such as high-intesity exercise and medications, to live longer more productive lives with PD.

A skin test identifies an abnormal protein, shown in orange and gold, inside nerves, pictured in green. People with Parkinson’s disease have the abnormal protein, called alpha-synuclein.  PHOTO: CND LIFE SCIENCES

Parkinson’s Unity Walk

This year the annual Parkinson’s Unity Walk is on Saturday, April 27 in New York’s Central Park. The walk is sponsored by the Michael J Fox Foundation and is celebrating it’s 30th year. Unfortunately, I cannot be there, but if any of you who are members of the Twitchy Woman community are planning to be there, let me know. I will try to connect you with others who will be there so that you can walk together.

100% of the funds raised go directly to Parkinson’s research and public policy priorities

Clinical Trials Corner

Jen has been very busy looking for trials and studies that you can participate in. This one looks very interesting.

LIGHTPD

The University of Rochester and Dr. Ray Dorsey have an interesting new clinical trial in which you participate from the comfort of your own home, doesn’t involve changes to your current meds, and you can earn $500.00!  All interactions with the medical  team will be via Zoom and phone.

This is a 7 month trial that involves the use of a device that emits a specialized light therapy to determine whether or not it provides a positive impact on both motor and non- motor symptoms.

Gadget of the Week

From Prosource Fit

This was recommended to me by a chiropractor. Sit on it while working on your computer. It will help you sit up straighter. It is good for your core muscles and can be used for a variety of exercises. It comes with a hand-help pump, which I promptly lost after inflating the disc.

You can buy it on Amazon

Have a great week

Clinical Trials Corner

SEPTEMBER 2025

I’ve been hesitant to feature new clinical trials as a few that I had on my list to include in future columns have either been removed from the site or marked as withdrawn. Keeping my fingers crossed that the trials I feature continue to recruit and maintain their funding. Click here for the rest of the report from Jen

Thank You!

All Twitchy Women programs are free to all who participate. However, they are not without cost. It takes resources to continue our work and we cannot do it without your help. Through our partnership with the Parkinson’s Wellness Fund, those who want to provide support can do so. Thank you to all of you who have contributed. It is really appreciated.
